The Century (100 miles)
On the last day of the half term holiday in October, Matt James and Pete set out on their most ambitious one day challenge yet: 100 miles in one day. This was a particularly hard challenge as the days were becoming much shorter. The first 50 miles started from Upper Basildon and was relatively easy, with no punctures or malfunctioning parts. After a short stop at Wantage for lunch, it was back on the road climbing yet more hills.
All was going fine until the last 10 miles; we were going to get back before it was due to get dark as there had been no major problems with the equipment.
At this point however things took a turn for the worse, James got a rear puncture (always the worst to get), which was fixed but within 100 metres, the infamous puncture returned.
By the time this was fixed, we were about 45 behind schedule. We could have done without any mishaps in the final 10 miles. Unfortunately, just as we turned our lights on after dark, Matt got a puncture. This was quite time-consuming to fix, so James decided to cycle to Pangbourne Station, saving an hour of waiting. Matt and Pete fixed the puncture and cycle the last 4 hilly miles home.
Overall a great experience, and now we understand what it's going to take to complete JOGLE.
