Athens to London 2012: The next trip

Previous Day

Day 15 - Fowey to Land's End - 65 miles

We couldn't believe it was the last day. The final countdown. The ability to count down the miles to Land's End made it worthwhile to get the first ferry across to Fowey at 7am. From there we cycled through a quiet St Austell, then down to Tregony in the classic English drizzle. After Tregony we took the famous King Harry Ferry to Trelissick

From there the weather closed in, and we had a tricky puncture outside Nancegollan. Normally we would have felt a bit down after this but we were still flying along afterwards. Soon though, we reached a huge traffic jam, so big it was actually labelled on our map - "Penzance". This is where it really hit us how close we were: a road sign to Land's End! 10 miles was all that remained, down the A30 all the way until the road ran out, just as the road had started in John O'Groats over two weeks ago. And we flew for the last 10 miles, despite the final few Cornish hills thrown our way. Soon enough, the end was quite literally in sight and we crossed the finish line for the mandatory photo (still grinning like maniacs)

Then we signed the book to say that we'd done it, and that was it. We stopped pedalling, packed up the bikes and drove back the way we'd just come. As Gordon Ramsay would say - "Done". What a great experience it was aswell.
