Day 1 - John O'Groats to Tongue - 68 miles
It was 8:30 as we rolled into John O'Groats car park. The 3 mile cycle from the youth hostel had flown by, and now we were eager to start. Unfortunately the man with the sign wasn't so keen, so we couldn't get the traditional photo. Oh well...
We set off into near perfect weather: light winds, sunshine and not too warm. For the first 35 miles, it was easy riding, with only one puncture just outside Thurso. From there, the hills got bigger and the terrain changed dramatically. Soon we were enjoying 2 mile long climbs and descents, and the roads were so well surfaced that descending quickly was easy.
For the final few climbs however, we finally received some "Scottish" weather - heavy rain and wind for the last 10 miles into Tongue. We made it through however, and soon found our way to the Ben Loyal Hotel in Tongue, where we all took a much needed break, ready for the next day
