Day 12 - Peterchurch to Eastertown - 90 miles

What was supposed to be a fairly easy day quickly turned into a nightmare day, which we were extremely glad to finish. Saying that, it started off nicely, with smooth B roads all the way to Monmouth, where we stopped for a healthy snack of doughnuts. From there we found a great A road which along with being quiet, was also flat, following the river to Chepstow. From here though it got worse - the M48 cycle path was impossible to find, and not one of us wanted to ask for directions from the "Pink Shop". Eventually we got there though, and luckily the bridge was open.

We headed off across the bridge into England, where we were left with only one option - the A403. This seemed okay, as there was a cycle path alongside. Within 2 miles however, we were faced with the all too common "END" written across the path, before it runs out and puts you back on the dual carriageway with the HGVs. Not pleasant. Then, following the cycle path signs, we got ourselves very lost, despite being in sight of the M5 bridge that we needed. After a long and twisting tour of Avonmouth, we finally found the bridge, but a jam on the M5 made the rest of the day very busy. I have never been so glad to see a campsite, but we only had 200 miles to go now.

The two lessons learnt: Never trust the bike signs, and nothing is ever as easy as it seems on the map!
