Day 8 - Carlisle to Clitheroe - 90 miles

We thought day 8 might be bad, and it certainly was. 90 miles and 5600ft of climbing was not what our legs wanted. After packing up, we left the campsite and cycled a quick first 20 miles to Penrith, where we stopped to take on supplies of chocolate and more chocolate. From there we took the A6 past Shap Summit and then left the main roads for the quieter B roads through Orton.

After Orton, the road climbed up the hills, high above the M6 which we could see below us. But it was after Kirkby Lonsdale that the real hills started - the climb over the moor to Slaidburn seemed endless, but the worst was yet to come.

As the map below shows, the climb to the top of Bradford Fell was a killer. 18% in places and the wind was picking up. But we knew that the campsite was just over the hill, and the 2 mile descent the other side was definitely worthwhile. Then we set up the tent, and set off for some fish and chips. Perfect.
